‘It was difficult at times, but we have shown great resilience,’ Ripley stated. ‘If you think about the back end of last season, we probably would have lost that game. We need to change those losses that we had into wins and draws, so this feels like that. We are a team that has never played together, and we have come up against a team that just came down from a division above, and we held our own. The gaffer has a bit of a tough job, because we have had so many injuries, and he is trying to find a way for everyone.’
Ripley also spoke about the impact of losing key players like Paul Glatzel, who is a crucial pressing player for the team. The injury to Glatzel meant that the team had to adapt quickly, with other players stepping up to fill the void. Ripley acknowledged the difficulty of the situation, noting that he has never experienced such a high number of injuries in pre-season before.
‘In all of my years in football, I have never had a pre-season with this many injuries. The gaffer is in disbelief, and so is everyone else, because you are just not expecting that many players to be out for a significant time,’ Ripley said.
Despite the challenges, Ripley was pleased with the clean sheet, which was their first of the season. ‘I am really happy with the clean sheet, you set your targets as a goalkeeper, but it is about getting points on the board, and we have got one from the first game of the season,’ he added.
