Former Swindon Town midfielder Jonny Williams scored for the PFA free agents team in a friendly match against their French counterparts. The match was part of the PFA's annual pre-season training camp for out-of-contract players.
What happened in the match?
Williams scored from a tight angle in the first half as the PFA team won 2-1, with former Blackpool striker Kyle Vassell getting the other goal. The PFA team included two former Swindon players, Williams and Jake Cain, who both started the match before coming off at half time.
Why does it matter for Swindon Town?
The match was an opportunity for the players to impress teams around Swindon's level, with many scouts in attendance to get a gauge of the levels they are operating at, and Swindon Town currently evaluating a fresh group of trialists during their trip to Alicante. The programme has been successful in the past, with 39 current free agents attending the first week of the camp, and former Swindon players Jojo Wollacott and Ryan Delaney also part of it.
What comes next for the players?
Cain left Swindon last summer and spent the season with Morecambe, but is now looking for another club, after making 27 National League appearances and getting two goals and six assists. Williams, who made the playoffs and was the club's top goalscorer in his two seasons at the Nigel Eady County Ground, will be hoping to secure a new deal, with his contract having expired. As of now, Swindon Town is 9th in England League Two, with 75 points from 46 games, and a recent form of LLDLW, and 12 points behind leaders Bromley, with their last result being a 1-2 loss to Chesterfield on 2026-05-02.
