Swindon Town defender Jake Batty has signed for League Two rivals Fleetwood Town on a two-year contract, following his release by the club this summer. The former Swindon and Blackburn Rovers academy player joins Fleetwood after experiencing an up-and-down six months at the Nigel Eady County Ground. League standing (final 2025 table -- new season not yet under way): 9th in League Two, 75 pts, 22W-9D-15L from 46 games, recent form LLDLW. Batty made 17 appearances for Swindon after signing on deadline day in February 2026, with 14 starts and two assists in the second half of the 2025/26 season. He was one of 13 players released in the summer as the club decided not to offer him a new contract. The defender's move to Fleetwood completes something of a trading of places between the two squads, as Swindon have signed two members of The Cod Army from last term, Mitch Clark and Matty Virtue. Upon completing the move, Batty told club media: “Accrington was a different learning curve. That was about trying to stay up and understanding what it meant to the lads and the club. “Then at Swindon it was the opposite, with a promotion push from January onwards. I think those experiences have helped me mentally, and I feel I’m in the strongest place I’ve been.” Batty, who developed through Blackburn Rovers’ youth system and made his senior debut for the club in the Carabao Cup against Hartlepool United in August 2022, spent part of the 2024/25 season on loan at Accrington Stanley. He made 25 appearances for Accrington and was named both Young Player of the Season and Supporters’ Trust Young Player of the Season at the club’s end-of-season awards. After leaving Accrington, he joined Swindon as a replacement for the outgoing Finley Munroe, who had been Town's star man before being recalled by Aston Villa and subsequently sold to Middlesbrough. Although he contributed defensively and going forward, Swindon opted to let him go in their summer rebuild, not believing that he was of the quality to be their starting left-back. Several of his released team-mates have since found new clubs, as Will Wright has joined Barnet, Ryan Delaney has signed for Oldham Athletic, Harry Gray has joined the academy at Coventry City, and Lucas Myers has moved to Haverfordwest County. Fleetwood believe Batty’s versatility-capable of playing left-back, left wing-back, or left wing-adds depth and energy to their squad. He has also represented England at Under-17 level, earning three caps during his youth career.
