Swindon Town has suffered a loss as former defender Dion Conroy has joined National League side Wealdstone. Conroy, 30, has signed a permanent deal with Wealdstone, subject to FA and National League clearance. He joins Wealdstone having spent the last four years at Crawley Town, where he wore the captain's armband, leading the club to promotion into League 1 at Wembley in 2024.
What happened?
Conroy has reunited with Gary Waddock, who previously played under the Wealdstone boss during a loan spell at National League side Aldershot Town in the 2016/17 season. On the signing of Conroy, Chairman Rory Fitzgerald told the club's website, "We are delighted to welcome Dion to Wealdstone, a player that we have been tracking since last season. Following the departure of Deon Woodman, we wanted to bring in a ready-made replacement and Dion (Conroy) brings a wealth of experience, strong leadership qualities and a proven track record of success. We believe he will be an excellent addition to the squad."
Why it matters for Swindon Town
Conroy's departure is a significant loss for Swindon Town, who will need to find a replacement for the experienced defender. The club's next fixture is against Grimsby on 27th February 2027, where they currently sit 16th in the table.
What comes next?
Wealdstone will be looking to integrate Conroy into their squad, who will be hoping to build on their recent performances. Meanwhile, Swindon Town will be focusing on finding a replacement for Conroy and preparing for their upcoming fixture against Grimsby.
