Swindon Town have completed the signing of Wigan Athletic winger Joseph Hungbo on a loan deal until the end of the season. Having been on the hunt for a wide man all summer, on the week of the new season beginning, Ian Holloway finally has his wide man. Hungbo arrives on loan from Wigan having been a regular part of their squad in League One last season, making 32 appearances in the third tier and picking up three assists. Those appearances only came with 16 starts, but dropping down a level, he promises to be an exciting prospect for Holloway's side. Playing predominantly on the left wing, the 26-year-old has the kind of speed and quality that Holloway has been after, having ranked in the top 20 per cent of League One wide men for successful crosses last season. He also has the strong defensive work rate that is required in Town's system, ranking in the top ten per cent for duels won, recoveries, and clearances, demonstrating that he will put in the required work. Speaking following his loan move to the Nigel Eady County Ground, he said: “I feel like after speaking to the Gaffer and understanding how he wants me to play, I feel like it will definitely bring out my best attributes. “I’m raring to go, I can’t wait to get out onto the pitch and get going. I understand it’s a new challenge, a different challenge, but I’m going to take that day by day and strength by strength, and hopefully the results can follow too.” Hungbo came through at Crystal Palace, although he never made a senior appearance there before moving to Watford in 2019. As a teenager, he began to crack into their first team in 2020/21, making five Championship appearances and then spending a season on loan with Ross County in the Scottish Premiership. He also got loaned out to Huddersfield Town before moving to 1 FC. Nürnberg in Germany, before returning to England with Rotherham United on loan, and then joining Wigan last summer. This move to Swindon will be his first taste of League Two football, having played at a higher level than this since an early loan spell at Aldershot Town. The former Crystal Palace winger is the second loan signing that Swindon have made this summer, alongside James Debayo from Hull City, so they still have three slots left to use on bolstering the squad. Swindon are still looking for more attacking reinforcements in the transfer market, but Hungbo adds to the present options of Aaron Drinan, Paul Glatzel, Joe Snowdon, and Ollie Palmer, with Harry Smith still a few weeks away from fitness. Louis Millard has also impressed during pre-season, but is still a young player and is not thought to be ready for regular senior action. In Swindon's 4-3-3 set-up, Hungbo is likely to play wide of the left, alongside Drinan playing up the middle and Glatzel on the right, a front three that possesses bags of pace.
