Billy Kirkman is ready to seize his opportunity as Swindon Town's first-choice left-back this season after a dedicated summer of work. The defender has targeted more goals and assists as he looks to build on promising pre-season performances.
Kirkman's place became more secure after a summer of injuries within the squad, and his early displays have drawn praise from manager Ian Holloway. He was named Man of the Match in a recent friendly against Cheltenham Town, recording the most interceptions and tackles of any player in an EFL fixture this season.
"I just wanted to play," Kirkman said. "I want to play for Swindon. I want to play for Ian Holloway. Staying here was always my priority."
Building on a fresh start
After a quiet second season at the County Ground where he started back-to-back games only once, Kirkman was offered a new contract in May. He made 15 appearances last term, with his progress hampered by several injuries. The 24-year-old says he has worked specifically to avoid similar setbacks.
"It is just about doing what I've done over the past few seasons, but just making sure I stay fit," he explained. "The way Holloway wants me to play now is a lot of running, up and down, but that's why I like full-back."
He described the pre-season running tests as particularly demanding, admitting he was sick after the first one during the club's training camp in Spain. Kirkman said he learned the value of proper recovery and napping to cope with the intense schedule.
Carney's coaching influence
New coach Dave Carney, a former left-back who played at a World Cup, has been providing technical guidance. One key focus has been improving Kirkman's effectiveness in the final third, with early signs positive. He provided an assist in a pre-season match against Bristol City and created a chance for Ollie Palmer to hit the post against Cardiff City.
"I want to get more goal contributions this year," Kirkman stated. "I know I can contribute goals and assists. I think I've just not shown that enough yet."
He said Carney and first-team coach Gavin Ward have been analysing clips with him, working on the variation and timing of his crosses and forward runs. Kirkman joined Swindon from The New Saints in 2022 and was initially sent on loan to Weston-super-Mare before being recalled by Holloway. He made 16 appearances in his first season at the club.
