Swindon Town boss Ian Holloway has told multiple first-team players they are free to leave the club this week as he begins the painful process of squad overhaul. The League Two side, sitting ninth with 75 points from 46 games and a recent run of just one draw in five, is bracing for a summer clear-out under the outspoken manager.
What did Holloway say?
After Swindon’s pre-season friendly against Crystal Palace, Holloway made it clear he would hold “serious conversations” with players whose futures lie elsewhere. His comments came after a patchy display in which Swindon twice led before conceding late goals to lose 2-1. The manager singled out the final 30 minutes as a disaster, blaming his own changes for the collapse.
“Some will stay, some won’t, and some will be moved on because they weren’t anything like as good as the others,” Holloway told reporters. “That’s my job now, and the minutes will change to 90 to get a fairer reflection of what we’re doing.”
Who is under the microscope?
Holloway’s latest XI against Palace featured three trialists-Connor Ripley, James Ball and Filozofe Mabete-alongside academy graduate Louis Millard. Of that group, only Ripley looks safe after agreeing a new deal this summer. Ball arrived on loan, while Millard remains in the youth ranks. That leaves Mabete and James Debayo in the crosshairs, with the manager frustrated by the French winger’s inconsistency.
Defender Ben Middlemas remains a project worth watching, while Millard’s inclusion suggests the first-choice spine is still fluid. Holloway’s frustration boiled over after the Palace game, when his side’s pressing evaporated under fresh legs.
Why does this matter?
Swindon sit 12 points behind runaway Bromley in the League Two title race, with just 70 goals scored and 59 conceded so far. Their last outing-a 2-1 loss at home to Chesterfield on 2 May 2026-ended a four-game winless streak. Holloway’s squad overhaul aims to tighten a leaky defence and inject pace into attack before the campaign resumes.
The manager’s blunt assessment-“Do I want to play that team for another 30 minutes at the end on Saturday? I am not sure that I do”-signals zero tolerance for deadwood. His next step is locking in who stays and who exits, with serious talks scheduled for this week.
League standing: 9th in England League Two, 75 pts, 22W-9D-15L from 46 games, recent form LLDLW.
