Swindon Town manager Ian Holloway has indicated that further player sales may be necessary before the club can complete additional signings this summer. The League Two side, who finished 9th last season with 75 points from 46 games (22W-9D-15L), have so far made four additions to their squad this window, bringing in Mitch Clark, Stephan Negru, and Matty Virtue. However, Holloway is keen to trim the squad and focus resources on players who fit his high-intensity, pressing style.
Why is Swindon Town looking to sell players?
Holloway believes the club’s budget could be used more effectively by reducing the squad size. Swindon entered the transfer window with a similar budget to last season-around £3 million-but have opted to spread it across fewer players. The manager has hinted that some players are unlikely to feature in his plans, particularly after a 5-1 defeat to Crystal Palace in a pre-season friendly. Holloway said: “There are ones here who probably don’t want to be here, but will I get the chance to move them on? There are some I don’t feel I need here any more.”
Which players could leave Swindon Town?
The club is believed to be open to offers on several first-team players, including Tom Nichols, James Ball, and Ollie Palmer. These experienced players may struggle with the physical demands of Holloway’s new style. Moving them on would free up funds to bring in a left-back, centre-back, and winger-positions the club is still targeting. Swindon’s recent form (0W-1D-4L in their last five games) suggests changes are needed to improve their performance.
What comes next for Swindon Town?
Holloway is determined to bring in players who fit his tactical vision, but the club’s ability to do so depends on offloading unwanted players. With 12 points separating them from leaders Bromley last season, Swindon will be looking to strengthen their squad to challenge for promotion. The manager has also emphasized the importance of getting fans behind the team, saying: “I will be doing all that I can to get our fans behind us, seeing a team that presses and chases like we did at times today.”
