Swindon Town Seeks Budget Flexibility Amid Injuries and Transfer Window Push
Swindon Town still has room in its budget to bring in new players, despite injuries to key players. Manager Ian Holloway is hopeful that the club will be able to make necessary additions before the end of the summer transfer window.
Current Situation and Challenges
Owner Clem Morfuni revealed earlier this summer that Swindon’s budget for the season would remain at around £3 million, similar to last season. However, injuries to Gavin Kilkenny and Fletcher Holman have posed questions over whether Town will have the flexibility to bring in players needed.
After a friendly against Crystal Palace, Holloway acknowledged that Swindon might need to move players out to free up funds for new signings, as they were already using the majority of their wage budget. Injuries to key players have since changed the situation, with Kilkenny and Holman expected to be sidelined for around four months.
Focus on Reinforcements
The club is now aiming to bring in direct replacements for the injured pair, particularly focusing on defensive midfield and attacking areas. The need for a deeper squad also made it difficult to move on from more players, as Town are short on options even before making further sales.
Holloway had said prior to the start of the season that Town may need to find ways of freeing up money in their budget: 'I think everybody knows that somehow we've got to try and find some other money.' However, following a 3-2 Carabao Cup defeat to Cardiff City, there was more confidence that they would have the funds to make further additions.
Recent Signings and Future Plans
Swindon completed three signings last week, with Joseph Hungbo and Sam Inwood joining on loan, whilst Kaelan Majekodunmi signed after a successful trial. The club is focusing on bringing in cover for injured duo Kilkenny and Holman, with the holding midfield position receiving particular attention.
Reports suggest that Town is in talks with two midfield players, Tom Nichols and James Debayo, as current options in that area are limited to Joe Snowdon and Louis Millard. Although Millard has impressed, Holloway remains keen to add further attacking options to influence games, as he often likes to have a variety of forwards to choose from.
Optimism for the Transfer Market
Despite setbacks, the Swindon boss remains optimistic about the club’s prospects in the transfer market and the level of support from within the club. Town are likely to be in the loan market for their future additions, with two matchday slots still available, although Holloway has hinted that they could look to sign players who are already under contract.
The club is on the hunt and will soon see what happens next, with some budget left and a clear idea of what they need.
