Season Opener
Oxford United Under-21s are set to kick off their league campaign against Swindon Town on Tuesday 25 August at the Training Centre, with a 2:00 pm start. The match will be the first fixture in the newly formed Next Wave Championship, a competition that will see nine founding clubs - including fellow League One sides Luton Town, MK Dons and Bromley - play each other twice before a playoff and grand final decide the champion.
New League Structure
In addition to the Next Wave Championship, Oxford will continue to compete in the Central League and the Central Cup. The club’s U21s last season finished the Central League unbeaten, claiming the title, and they aim to defend that success this year. The dual-league format will test squad depth, with a number of Under-18 players named in the squad for the Swindon match.
Pre-season Recap
Oxford’s pre-season schedule included two challenging fixtures. They opened with a 1-1 draw away at Millwall, before losing to a strong Swansea City side. These results set the tone for a competitive start to the season.
Swindon Town’s Perspective
Swindon Town will welcome the young Oxford side to the Training Centre, offering the Swindon squad a chance to face a side that has recently proven its resilience. The match will provide valuable experience for both teams as they prepare for their respective league campaigns.
