Former Swindon Town defender Aden Flint has signed for League Two rivals Rochdale on a short-term contract until January. The 37-year-old centre-back, who has made many senior appearances, joins after a summer of waiting for the right opportunity.
Flint told the Swindon Advertiser he was happy to get the move done. "I’m grateful to come and play here," he said. "I’m looking forward to help the lads out; I’ve got good experience to use on and off the pitch."
Flint's Swindon history
Flint first joined Swindon from Alfreton Town in January 2011 for a reported fee. He was a key figure in the club's promotion from League Two the following season, scoring in a decisive win over Port Vale that clinched the title. He also scored a memorable extra-time goal at Premier League Stoke in the League Cup and a late equaliser against Brentford in a League One play-off semi-final at the County Ground. His departure to Bristol City in 2013 included a sell-on clause for Alfreton.
His later career took him to Middlesbrough, Cardiff City, Sheffield Wednesday, Stoke City, Mansfield Town and Walsall. He was named in the PFA Team of the Year after helping Mansfield win promotion in 2024.
Rochdale's defensive need
Rochdale have conceded several goals from corners in their first matches back in League Two. They hope Flint's vast experience will solidify a defence that includes several younger players. He made a number of appearances for Walsall before becoming a free agent.
Swindon Town, meanwhile, are focused on their own campaign. They sit second in League Two, their recent form reading WWLWD. Their last outing was a home win over Colchester, with Aaron Drinan netting a hat-trick.
Flint's move to a direct rival adds an extra layer to future meetings, though his next fixture is with Rochdale away at Harrogate Town this Saturday.
