Ian Holloway is searching for answers to Swindon Town's chronic away-day problems after a heavy defeat at York City. The Robins were thrashed 4-0 at the LNER Community Stadium, a result that leaves them with just one point from three league games on the road this season.
Holloway held a training session at St George’s Park on Friday as part of his review. The manager told the Swindon Advertiser he is leaving no stone unturned. "I’m looking at everything, because we cannot play like this away from home for two games in a row and concede seven goals," he said.
A stark contrast
The collapse in North Yorkshire stands in stark contrast to Swindon's perfect record at the Nigel Eady County Ground. They have won all three home matches, scoring eight goals. That home form has kept them in the top half of League Two, sitting ninth with 10 points from six games. But the away form is a major concern.
This season's travels have yielded zero goals scored and seven conceded. The club's last away victory in any competition dates back to 21 March. Across 18 away matches in 2026, Swindon have managed only five wins against ten defeats.
The York defeat
Alex Newby opened the scoring for York in the 16th minute, with Ollie Banks adding a second eight minutes later. Newby netted again in the 72nd minute before Ollie Pearce completed the rout ten minutes from time. It was a comprehensive beating that followed a 3-0 loss at Oldham in late August.
Holloway pointed to the practical challenges of travel. "When you travel and you train, you get off the bus and you are a bit stiff," he noted, suggesting the preparation routine is under scrutiny. The immediate focus is on halting this pattern at Salford City this weekend.
Next up at Salford
The trip to the Peninsula Stadium presents another tough test. Salford have won their last two home games and will be confident. Swindon's recent form reads three wins and two losses from their last five, a pattern of inconsistency Holloway is desperate to smooth out.
With the team just two points behind leaders Barnet, solving the away puzzle could propel a promotion push. The manager's work at St George’s Park this week is the first step. Swindon face Salford City on Saturday, 19 September.
