Former Swindon Town players Joe Tomlinson and Pierce Sweeney have joined Cheltenham Town.

What happened?

Cheltenham Town have completed a double swoop for the two former Swindon Town players. Joe Tomlinson, a left wing-back, made over 100 appearances for Milton Keynes Dons, but had two loan spells with Swindon Town prior to his move there. Pierce Sweeney, a defender, ended ten years with Exeter City by heading to Cheltenham Town, after a brief stint with Swindon Town in 2021.

Why it matters for Swindon Town

The signings come as Swindon Town is currently 9th in League Two, with 75 points from 46 games, and a recent form of LLDLW. Their last result was a 1-2 loss to Chesterfield on 2026-05-02. The team is 12 points behind leaders Bromley, with a goal difference of +11, having scored 70 goals and conceded 59.

What comes next?

Steve Cotterill, Cheltenham Town's manager, said of his new signings: “Joe is someone I have known for a few years and kept an eye on. Once I knew his contract was coming to an end with MK Dons, he was someone I wanted to secure for our football club.” Cotterill also praised Sweeney, saying he is a “really good defender, great experience and a fantastic character.” The signings are expected to strengthen Cheltenham Town's squad for the upcoming season. | Category | Stat | | --- | --- | | League standing | 9th in League Two | | Points | 75 | | Recent form | LLDLW | | Goal difference | +11 | | Goals scored | 70 | | Goals conceded | 59 | The new season is expected to be highly competitive, with Swindon Town looking to improve their position in the league.
