Swindon Town have signed former Fleetwood Town midfielder Matty Virtue on a two-year deal. The signing bolsters Swindon Town's midfield options ahead of the new season.
What does this mean for Swindon Town?
Virtue's arrival is a significant boost to Swindon Town's midfield, with the 29-year-old bringing goalscoring ability and experience to the team.
As of the end of the 2025/26 season, Swindon Town sat 9th in League Two, with 75 points from 46 games, and a recent form of LLDLW. | Category | Stat | | --- | --- | | League standing | 9th | | Points | 75 | | Recent form | LLDLW |
How did the signing come about?
Virtue was signed by Ian Holloway, who managed to convince him that Swindon Town was the right place for him, despite interest from other League Two clubs.
The midfielder has a strong track record, having scored nine goals in the 2024/25 season for Fleetwood Town, and three goals and five assists in the following season.
What's next for Swindon Town?
With Virtue's signing, Swindon Town's midfield options now include Ollie Clarke, Gavin Kilkenny, Tom Nichols, James Ball, Joe Snowdon, Ben Middlemas, and Virtue, providing a strong foundation for the upcoming season. Virtue is likely to compete with Middlemas for a starting spot as a more attacking presence in the centre of the park.
Prior to his time at Fleetwood, Virtue came through the ranks at Chelsea and Liverpool, before getting his senior start on loan at Notts County, where he helped them make the League Two playoffs. A five-year stint with Blackpool followed, as well as a loan spell at Lincoln City, before becoming a key man for The Cod Army.
Player reaction
Speaking after joining the club, Virtue said: “Obviously, there’s one aim everyone knows it, and you want to be successful in your football career, the club wants to be successful, so why would I not want to join? “It’s always nice to come back in; there’s always a bit of nerves meeting a new set of lads, and a new staff, but they’ve all been really helpful and accommodating, and I’m looking forward to kicking on.
