Sky Sports pundit Don Goodman has identified Swindon Town's away form as the key area for improvement after a mixed start to the League Two season. The Robins sit 13th in the standings with 10 points from seven games, having won all three of their home matches but failed to score in four away trips.
Goodman, an EFL expert, pointed to the stark contrast in results. "What jumps off the page is the contrast between their home and away form," he said. "They’ve won all three at home, but away from home they’ve drawn one, lost three, and haven’t even scored a goal." The team's recent form reads LLLWW, with three consecutive defeats including a 1-0 loss at Salford City last time out. The team's overall stats show they have scored eight goals at the County Ground this season but conceded eight on their travels.
Manager Ian Holloway is understood to have examined every aspect of the club's away trips, from travel schedules to training routines, in search of a solution. The last time Swindon found the net on the road was in a 1-0 defeat at Cambridge United on April 2, with their last away victory coming at Tranmere Rovers on March 21.
Despite the concerning trend, Goodman believes the squad and manager give reason for optimism. "I expect Swindon Town to be challenging come the end of the season because of the squad they have and more importantly, the manager," he added. "But it’s definitely been a mixed bag, and Ian Holloway will be demanding more." The team are currently five points behind leaders Barnet.
Swindon face Accrington Stanley at home this weekend, a chance to build on their perfect home record. Looking ahead on the fixtures list, the next away test is a trip to Rochdale on October 3, which will present another opportunity to end their scoring drought on the road.
