Swindon Town are open to selling players during the transfer window. Darren Oldaker's exit to Southend United is the first step in a mini clearout of last season's squad.

What happened?

Swindon Town's transfer dealings kicked into life last week, with Mitch Clark joining from Port Vale as a wing-back option on both sides, but also the exit of Oldaker to National League Southend for an undisclosed fee.

Why it matters for Swindon Town

Ian Holloway, the manager, has said that he “didn’t like” his squad by the end of last season, and is open to multiple exits to get the kind of positive group that has the kind of mentality that he wants. Oldaker was amongst the group of four for whom Town are open to offers on.

What comes next?

Swindon hope to turn the present group of 19 players into 24 or 25, but this will rely on there being interest from elsewhere in their players. Outside of this would be a likely loan departure for Jake Tabor to give him more experience at a higher level.

Swindon have seven players aged 30 and over, where Holloway would normally want four. Trimming that group down so that Town do not end up in a position like they did last season, when they had to rely on so many older players who are less capable of keeping up with his high-energy style, is a hope.

Swindon are hoping to keep hold of the likes of Aaron Drinan, Joe Snowdon, and Fletcher Holman, but all three have admirers in higher divisions, and sizeable bids could force them into a sale there as well.
