Swindon Town have signed ex-Oxford United defender Stephan Negru on a two-year deal. Negru, 23, joins the club after his release from Oxford United this summer.
What happened?
The Moldovan international was born in Ireland and came through at Shelbourne before joining Oxford in 2023. He made 21 appearances in his first 18 months at the Kassam Stadium.
Why it matters for Swindon Town
Negru's signing adds much-needed depth to Swindon's defensive ranks, where he will join Ryan Tafazolli and Filozofe Mabete. As of 23 Jun 2026, Swindon Town stand 9th in England League Two, with 75 pts from 46 games.
What comes next?
Negru is excited to get started, saying: “Yeah, I’m excited, I’m happy to get it done and over the line.” He has already played senior football for four seasons, and has the mixture of energy and experience that Ian Holloway is looking for. | Stat | Value | | --- | --- | | League standing | 9th in England League Two | | Points | 75 pts | | Recent form | LLDLW | | Last result | Swindon Town 1-2 Chesterfield (2026-05-02) | Ian Holloway added: “I really like him, and I’m delighted to have him. He’s a combative centre-back who is also very comfortable on the ball.” Negru has signed a two-year contract with Swindon, seeing him join Charlie Summers, Ben Middlemas, Gavin Kilkenny, and Aaron Drinan in being locked down until the summer of 2028.
